An Introduction to WORKDAY

"I am Arunava Banerjee. I am a Certified Workday Integration Consultant currently employed with Hexaware Technologies. This is my first blog and I decided to write this blog post specifically for the consultants who are willing to cross train into Workday. "

Workday

Workday is a cloud based software vendor that specializes in human capital management and financial management applications.
Workday claims its use of a single cloud based database for both human capital as well as financials which provides better integration between inter modules.

Modules managed by Workday are as follows,

  • HCM
  • Payroll
  • Time Sheet
  • Approvals and Leaves
  • Financials
  • Purchasing
  • Expenses
  • Accounts

Peoplesoft Vs Workday

Workday was founded in 2005 by Dave Duffield and AneelBhusri, former executives of Peoplesoft, an enterprise resource planning(ERP) later acquired by Oracle.
Peoplesoft and Workday both are horizontal ERP solutions who own two largest sizes of the market share. Both solutions are built for enterprise sized businesses and offer similar features.

Both tools are available as cloud based solutions. Workday runs only on Public cloud while Peoplesoft can run on Public as well as Private cloud.
The biggest difference between Workday and Peoplesoft is how they are deployed. Workday is meant to function only on cloud, hence during deployment or upgrades developers push the software updates automatically in the cloud. Sys-Admins or end users don’t have any role to play in manually updates. Due to this no investment in hardware or infrastructure is required .

Since Peoplesoft is available in Public cloud, Private cloud and on-premise, the updates cannot be pushed automatically. Instead, Peoplesoft uses selective adoption update which means updated version of the software becomes available in timely manner and the sys-admins take care of the rest manually.
